Welcome back to Unlocked, the podcast where we don't just talk about thriving at work, we dig into the messy, complicated stuff that most people avoid. Today's topic, we're going to talk about workplace politics. Because politics, workplace politics, yeah, they're like that unspoken tension at family dinner. Everyone feels it, but no one really wants to address it. Whether it's nepotism, navigating relationships with your boss, or just dealing with the day-to-day dynamics of office life, workplace politics can make or break your experience.
And the key really is in avoiding them. It's learning how to navigate them without losing your integrity or your sanity. So, by the end of this episode, you'll have practical strategies to handle challenging environments with professionalism and finesse. The episode contains three different lists. So, get out your pen and paper, or if you're writing with a pen for longer than 30 seconds, hurt your hand like it does mine, then just get out the keyboard and type it up.
So, let's start by addressing the elephant in the room. Workplace politics aren't inherently bad. No, they're not. You heard me right. At their core, they're just the dynamics of relationships, influence, and the power within an organization. The problem isn't the politics, it's how they're played. When politics becomes self-serving or toxic, they damage trust and morale. But when they're navigated thoroughly and thoughtfully, they can actually foster collaboration and transparency. Here's the uncomfortable truth for all of you. Politics exists in every workplace. You can't just opt out of them. The question is whether you'll navigate them skillfully or let them trip you up. So, let's talk about the first thing I listed earlier, nepotism, a classic frustration in workplace politics. It's hard not to feel demoralized when someone seems to get ahead based on who they know rather than what they contribute. But here's the thing dwelling on the unfairness of it all doesn't really get you anywhere. So, here's your strategy instead. Focus on what you can control, your own performance. Build a reputation for being reliable, skilled, collaborative. Nepotism may only open doors for some, but it doesn't guarantee respect. When you consistently deliver results, people will notice, no matter who's getting the leg up. Document your contributions. Keep a running list of accomplishments and measurable impacts. This isn't just for your ego. No, no, no, no. It's your evidence when you need to advocate for yourself in performance reviews or conversations about promotions or anything else.
So, here's a quick framework for getting more aligned with your boss. You ready?
Number 1: Know what success looks like for them.
Ask yourself, what does my boss care about? And how can I best achieve that thing?
Number 2: Communicate proactively.
Don't make them chase you for updates. Keep them informed about your progress, challenges, solutions, and all you introverts out there that are like, just keeping everything in your brain because you want it to be perfect. You don't want to tell them anything yet or whatever. Just over communicate, over communicate.
Number 3: Adapt your style.
Do they prefer emails or quick chats? Big picture summaries or detailed reports? Speak their language to build alignment, okay? Give it to them the way they want it. And that goes for everybody in your workplace.
Remember your relationship with your boss is a partnership. When they succeed, you succeed. It's not manipulation. No, no, no, it's teamwork. All right. This one's for the, the leaders listening. So, all you leaders out there, if you want to reduce toxic politics in your workplace, transparency is your greatest ally. When people feel left in the dark, rumors and resentment fill the gaps. But when they have clear information about decisions, expectations, and goals, well, trust grows. I see this all the time. Start with these steps, okay?
Here's three steps for you.
Number 1: Be upfront about your decisions. If a choice is made that might ruffle feathers like a promotion or resource allocation, explain the why behind it. Older generations forget this. They forget the why and the younger generations want it.
Number 2: Encourage open dialogue. Make it safe for employees to voice concerns or ask questions without fear of retaliation. Psychological safety.
Number 3: Model integrity. If you play favorites or dodge accountability, you're setting the tone for the whole team. Transparency starts at the top. So, you don't want other people to do that? Don't do it yourself.
Now let's get into the, what I call the nitty gritty. Yeah, the nitty gritty. As an employee, how do you navigate the politics without getting caught up in drama?
Number 1: Stay professional. No matter how frustrating the environment gets, keep your communication respectful and your actions aligned with your values. Drama might feel satisfying in the moment, but it rarely leads to long-term success.
Number 2: Build alliances, not just cliques. Strong relationships across teams and levels are your safety net. Focus on collaboration and mutual respect rather than gossip or exclusion.
Number 3: Pick your battles. Not every political situation is worth your energy. Honestly, ask yourself. Does this impact my ability to do my job or my long-term goals? If not, just let it go. I know, that's a tough one.
Number 4: Know when to walk away. If the politics in your workplace are consistently toxic and unchangeable, you know what? It's okay to prioritize your wellbeing and explore other possibilities. No job is worth your mental health. Workplace politics aren't going anywhere, y'all, but here's the good news.
You have more control than you think by focusing on your performance, building meaningful relationships, maintaining your professionalism. You can navigate even the most challenging environments with confidence.
